Raise shields! We’re entering the Neutral Zone.

March 24, 2010

Ok, I am a bit of a Trekker, but this line from Star Trek really does encapsulate some of the feelings you have when starting a Startup.

Like the Star Ship Enterprise, you enter a great unknown called the Neutral Zone.  Here your doubts and fears are all around you.  And once you venture in, it can seem like forever before you successfully execute your mission, as you’re travelling through a large expanse of unchartered space, which differs for each and every space venturer.

The risks are high, you could fail, but you know if you could just execute the mission, the rewards will far outweigh them, so you try to keep that in mind as you continue your mission into the vast unknown.

And just like the Enterprise, you raise your shields to help protect you.  This might include attending training events to help fill some “gaps”, obtaining mentoring or advice to steer you in the right direction or networking to meet potential business contacts, partners or clients.

But the Neutral Zone seems as void and unending as it did before you entered it.  But you’re committed, you’re determined to bodly go and continue until you reach the end.

Do you feel like you’re entering the Neutral Zone?  I do.

  1. Trekkers might point out that the Neutral Zone is a region of neutral space between the Federation and the Romulan Empire and perhaps not so unknown as this blog suggests. Also, the Expanse, of the Enterprise series, might have been a better analogy.

But I think the Neutral Zone of the Picard series was more threatening and frightening than the Expanse of the Archer one.
