Ignorance of the Rules – Not A Defence

December 17, 2009

I can’t believe the defence an MP is trying to use to avoid repaying a wrongly claimed expense.

As a tax payer, if I don’t pay my takes, I’m not allowed to claim ignorance of the law and it certainly does not occur in any other cases of law I’m aware of.

And certainly, if you join a club, you’re supposed to know and agree to the rules. Yet, Mr Bernard Jenkin, MP for Essex North, is using the defence of ignorance to avoid repaying expenses claimed for rent on a property owned by his sister-in-law.  Hmmm.

Well Mr Jenkin, I think you MPs have had it all your way a little too much, and it’s time to just suck it [all] up and just pay the fine.
