Spacemen and Caves

November 3, 2009

I’ve just read a Space.com article about the discovery of caves on Mars.  The author suggested that these could be good places to search for past microbial life.

But, what really got my attention was his view that these caves could also be used to provide shelter for astronauts from the harsh Martian conditions.  And this made me think back to humankind’s beginnings and images of the ‘Dawn of Man’ from 2001: A Space Odyssey just came into my head.

And I can see the headline now, “Spacemen Head to Mars and Seek Shelter in A Cave.” So, we develop all of this technology just to travel Mars, across the vastness of space, to find solace in a cave!  And I wonder, are we really so different from our primitive ancestors?
